The plastic expandables are the most widely used because they are easier to put-up while still providing strength and durability.  The system is closed with Velcro flaps to make water tight connection.

The metal surcingles is an older style expandable and features easy installation.  The drawback is the strength of the buckles loosen easily.

The rope laceline expandable system is strongest of the three.  This is harder to assemble system. It comes with two types of configurations - straight or half and half.
